Mayo Council Official Calls For Boycott Of Holiday Home Owners
A Mayo County Council official wants a boycott of holiday-home owners in the county.
Its director of housing Tom Gilligan wrote to councillors calling for an immediate boycott which would involve avoiding businesses owned by absentee landlords, and refusing to engage with holidayhome owners.
He said many of the properties are left empty for large parts of the year - describing them as "bad neighbours".
Mr Gilligan has argued the boycott could be a "potential remedy" to bringing such properties back into use for housing.
He said there are 6,000 holiday homes in county Mayo.
